Turn Native Plant Passion into Garden Reality

Turn Native Plant Passion into Garden Reality

5 Key Considerations

5 Key Considerations

NO. 1

Pick the area for transformation

NO. 2

Choose native plants suitable for site

NO. 3

Plan the layout of the native plants

NO. 4

Prepare the site, add soil, install the plants, add mulch and water

NO. 5

Identify each plant with plant signs next to them

Site Location Characteristics

  • Soil in the Red River Valley is clay – fertile, alkaline, high in calcium and other nutrients and minerals.
  • Many prairie native plants are adaptable to living on clay, and many others do well provided there is adequate drainage. Others do quite well in gravel, rocky or sandy areas, but suffer if given too much moisture.
  • Many plants are flexible, but some suffer and fade in soggy or dry conditions.
  • Plants will always perform better in ideal moisture conditions.
  • Many plants require or grow best in full sun.
  • Some plants grow slower, shorter or have less flowers/fruit in shadier conditions.
  • This is more of a concern for new plantings as they have not fully established yet.

Flora Selection based on Site Characteristics and Pollinator Traffic Seeking

Successful native plant gardens not only consider the site but also provides opportunity to attract pollinators that you wish to see in your yard. This can be watching a Monarch Butterfly laying her eggs on milkweed.

Many local native plant sellers have catalogues that identify the ideal conditions for the plant to grow in such as moisture and sun conditions. There are hundreds of choices to chose from. Make a list of plants suitable to your site. Check Manitoba Plant Hardiness Zone Map to insure your chosen plants are rated for appropriate zone in your area.

Rewild Design

  • Take note of size, form, and spread of the plants you have on your list
  • Add plants about one foot apart
  • Provide plants that bloom all the way from April to October
  • It is often more challenging to find early and late-blooming plants as compared to plants that bloom in the middle of the summer

Preparation & Installation

Preparing the soil for planting may be the most labour-intensive phase for planting, depending on the existing vegetation

Consider hiring a professional native plant designer and installer

Spread Awareness

By installing signage and plant signs, passersby are aware it is pollinator garden and supporting nature.

The first year or two, watering will be required to help the new plants establish and lay down deep roots. Mulching and weeding the garden keeps unwanted plants from growing.
