As a child, I found butterflies intriguing and saw so many flying around our little urban yard. Jump forward many decades, I became reacquainted with butterflies after taking a Continuing Ed Course in 2018 called “Raise Your Own Butterflies”. I was hooked but there was one big problem – no butterflies fluttering around my back yard. As I pondered this further, I wondered what I needed to do to attract them. With approximately 150 species of butterflies in Manitoba, I realized habitat was a crucial part of a butterfly’s life. Each year, I began adding more and more native plants. My selection included host plants for the butterflies to lay their eggs. It is true, if you plant it, they will come.
